AXEL VERVOORDT...KATIE NOONAN & BREAST CANCER RESEARCH...FLOORED BY QLD TIMBER...MORE LOOKS WE LOVE....WARMING BY THE FIRE WITH CHICKEN PIE AND FRANGELICO HOT CHOCOLATE...YES PLEASE!! HAPPY FRIDAY TO ALL.

When I first started working for the Charcoal Team I had never heard of Axel Vervoordt..let alone spell or pronounce his name.  Over my time here I have come to recognise the main design influences of Colette and Cathie, with one of them being Axel Vervoordt.  He is undoubtedly one of the most influencial designers in the world, and you will find that there are not many experienced Interior Designers out there who have not heard of him.
 Axel Vervoordt

Amongst his many achievements, Axel has established a castle in a locale near Antwerp called 's-Gravenwezel, and Kanaal gallery in a restored industrial complex on the banks of a nearby canal. Vervoodt started buying and selling antiques when he was a student. As a young adult, he bought and restored a 16th-century house in the center of Antwerp. When numerous admiring clients asked him to do the same, he fell into decorating. Now, with a staff of 100, he personally supervises between 12 and 20 interior design commissions a year for a variety of royalty, pop stars, museums, bankers, collectors and musicians.

In 1984 Vervoordt bought the castle, from which he operated his antiques and design business, and when he ran out of space his search for larger quarters led him to the Kanaal in 1999.....as you do...
Though the Vervoordt castle and Kanaal are two entirely different buildings, some of the spaces and the way they are arranged with furniture, art or objects look very similar at the hands of Vervoordt.

"I like to live in the warm, rich world of the baroque and the serene, calm world of the Orient. I love Zen houses ... and I also admire Thai monasteries because even unrestored and empty they have a real aura of peace and beauty," writes Vervoordt. In the castle, many of the spaces are minimally furnished, with a few pieces of furniture and sculpture.
 The Kanaal

When Vervoordt decided to buy the Kanaal, a complex of warehouses, grain silos and a large round building, he wanted a truly minimalist environment where he could exercise his vision of "limitless spatial purity." By stripping the buildings down to the bare wooden board or cement floors and exposed brick or whitewashed-cement block walls, Vervoordt hopes to show "how we might wish to live in the 21st century." Not only is the variety of the antiques and art that he offers awe-inspiring but so too is his philosophy. "I consider myself a very eclectic collector and dealer. I treasure the timeless and disdain the trendy," states Vervoordt.

"My taste spans centuries, continents and economic strata. I love the tension between different object and different cultures." Two elaborate silver candelabra "taken away from some princely 18th-century dining table become not table decoration, not emblems of wealth and power, but strange and beautiful abstract objects," he writes.

The castle and Kanaal are both opened to the public once a year, and those who appreciate his work flock to see for themselves the incredible beauty of the interior and grounds.

We love music here at Charcoal.  Firm believers in the fact that your shopping experience should encompass a treat to all the senses.  This is our sanctuary, and we want it to feel like that for you too.  That's why we love to play the music of Brisbane based songstress Katie Noonan.  We have been fans for years now, so you can imagine how excited we were for our friend and client Tracey McGown from McGown Creative when she got the job to look after Katie who is one of the ambassadors for Breast Cancer Research Fundraising via the PA Hospital.  Apparently at a fund raiser held on Wednesday night of this week, Katie was asked to say a few words but asked if it would be OK if she sung instead....Wow!

With about one and a half million new
cases of breast cancer diagnosed globally
every year and predictions the incidence
of this disease will increase substantially
between now and 2019 – Dr Naderi from the PA and
his team are upping the ante in their fight
for a more effective treatment with better
outcomes.

EASY LEEK, MUSHROOM AND CHICKEN PIES

Mmmmmm?? Easy you say?  Yes!  These little pies are so easy to make and Leeks are in season, so you get the full nutritious benefit.  Mushrooms are my all time favourite food and combined with the Leek and the Chicken I found this a very moorish recipe.  It truly is easy and you will have the kids coming back for seconds and thirds with nary a notion that they are ingesting anything remotely 'healthy'.....enjoy!

Ingredients (serves 4)

  • 6 sheets filo pastry
  • 50g butter, melted
  • 1 tbs olive oil
  • 6 chicken thigh fillets, cut into 2cm pieces
  • 200g Swiss brown mushrooms, halved
  • 2 leeks, white part only, thickly sliced
  • 2 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 cup (125ml) sour cream
  • 1 tbs lemon juice
  • 1 tbs coarsely chopped tarragon

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 200°C. Cut the filo sheets in half lengthways. Cut each filo strip into thirds to make squares. Brush the filo with butter and layer sheets into 4 stacks. Line four 10cm fluted tart tins with removable bases with the pastry stacks. Place on an oven tray. Bake in oven for 10 minutes or until golden.
  2. Meanwhile, heat half the oil in a frying pan over high heat. Add the chicken and cook, turning occasionally, for 5 minutes or until golden. Transfer to a bowl. Heat remaining oil and add mushrooms and leeks. Cook, turning occasionally, for 5 minutes or until mushrooms are tender. Return chicken to pan. Add the mustard, sour cream and lemon juice and bring to the boil. Reduce heat to low and cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes or until chicken is cooked through and sauce thickens. Remove from heat and season with salt and pepper. Add the tarragon and gently toss to combine.
  3. Place filo cases on serving plates and fill with chicken mixture. Serve immediately.

WELCOME TO COCKTAIL FRIDAY...THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE WEEK

THIS WEEK....FRANGELICO HOT CHOCOLATE THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Hot Chocolate and Frangelico combo says to me gotta run 30 kilometres over the weekend, and carrot sticks for all of next week...but who cares?  It's all worth every seductive sip.  We bought one of those cool outdoor fireplaces (not the mexican chimenea type...ewwww) the other day and its been a camping experience every single day of the week since!  We are hooked on this fireplace, although I am coming to work every day smelling a bit like a lump of coal, but its all worth it!  So what if the house reeks of old smoke and my voice is a bit '1900 raspy'??  Just to be able to sit by the fire every night is better than telly!  And the teenage kids sit with us too now. So much fun.  So, as a little dessert treat I made Pete the Greek and I a Hot Chocolate with the frangelico.  Frangelico is a hazelnut liqueur of Italian origin.  A little does go a long way, so you can also use it in desserts.  There are some great recipes out there using Frangelico.  I also like it over ice with lime...yes..lime...have I mentioned before how much we like lime?...sorry LOVE lime.  So, may I suggest that if you do have a fireplace, brazier or even a wood barbecue, you light it up, pop the feet up and enjoy this delicious drink that is guaranteed to warm you from the inside out.

Make this recipe just before serving. Frangelico is a hazelnut-flavoured liqueur. If unavailable, you can use amaretto, an almond-flavoured liqueur.

Ingredients (serves 6)

  • 1.5L (6 cups) milk
  • 375ml (1 1/2 cups) thickened cream
  • 125ml (1/2 cup) Frangelico liqueur
  • 200g good-quality dark chocolate, finely chopped

Method

  1. Combine the milk and cream in a large saucepan over high heat. Bring just to the boil. Remove from heat. Stir in Frangelico.
  2. Divide the chocolate among serving glasses. Pour over the Frangelico mixture and serve immediately.
 Enjoy!

Wishing you a terrific weekend.  I have much to do in the herb garden.  Cathie is going to be here on Saturday so pop in and say hi whilst checking out our fabulous Sale (up to 50% off selected furniture styles, furniture and accessories).  And so we leave you with this beautiful quote from Audrey Hepburn...its an oldie but a goodie and I have shared it in the past, but worthwhile posting it up again for those who have not seen this before....until next Friday.....Cathie, Colette and Jen....The Charcoal Team

CHARCOAL INTERIORS FEATURE....HOW NOT TO DECORATE.
5 TOP TIPS TO SAVE YOU TIME, MONEY AND A WHOLE LOT OF HEADACHE.

We are big fans of the TV Show 'How Not To Decorate' starring the adorable Englishmen Justin Ryan and Colin McAllister.  These Interior Design Gurus and quite frankly...slightly mad individuals...venture weekly into homes that are desperately in need of a complete overhaul.  The boys, in their deliciously 'campy' style create a hysterical mix of humour and complete creative genius to come up with amazing solutions which eventually become a reality.  From 'Drab-ulous'...to 'Fabulous'.
Tune in to 7Two Friday nights at 9.30pm for this really entertaining and inspiring show that is a must see for all lovers of Interior Design.

5 WAYS TO AVOID AN INTERIOR DESIGN DISASTER

There are those who can just put together a delightfully stylish home without batting an eyelid. You walk into the space and feel completely at ease.  The home cannot be classified to any certain era...no orange melamine benchtops in the kitchen teamed with pine cupboards and matching handles, no garish feature walls to be seen and not a trace of shag pile or oversized outdated 'trend' furniture and accessories.
And then, there are those clients who come into the showroom looking for direction, either for the reasons of time restrictions or perhaps their creative streak leans itself towards other endeavours, who just need some clear advice and professional assistance when it comes to creating a home that reflects their personal taste and style.
There are 5 main rules to adhere to when starting off the process of creating a beautiful home space, and we would like to share them with you.....
Dont...
1. Ignore the size of the room. Nothing looks more out of place than doll-house sized furniture in a grand living room, or a baby grand piano stuffed into a cozy den. The furniture that worked in your old house or apartment may simply be out of scale for the rooms in your new home, so take a deep breath, let go and replace those items with furniture that is a realistic balance.
This small sun room space is balanced and uncluttered with a medium sized round French Provincial Style dining setting, the addition of shutters in place of heavy drapery, giving this smaller sized room a feeling of spaciousness and light.

Dont...
2. Hang all of your pictures too high. For some reason, most do-it-yourself decorators hang pictures at a height that only works for NBA basketball players. The focal point of the piece of art should be at gallery level, which is generally considered to be at eye-level for an average person who is 5 feet 7 inches tall. If you are hanging a picture to act as an accent piece for a table or lamp, the elements should be within 10 or 12 inches of each other.
Nina with her collection of Owls...even she admits it scares away the boys and can be a teeny wee bit creepy...
Dont...
3. Display every nick nack you own. In home interior design, more is not necessarily better. If you own a large collection of porcelain rabbits (or in the case of Nina from Offspring...Owls), it can be visually overwhelming to display them all together.. My Grandmother collects spoons, which were displayed for all to see in the lounge room at one point...but now thankfully she has them in a drawer.  She can bring them out to show off when her art ladies come around, but then they fit nicely back in the drawer away from view.  Its ok to showcase a couple of special items or collectables, pop the rest away, and then swap them over to create a fresh look when you feel a change is necessary.  Collectables can definitely fit into a room scheme as long as they are not in numbers and added to give a subtle quirkiness.  I love Buddhas....Cath loves Antique Wooden and Stone Horses....but we only display one or two maximum in our home at one time....and dont get me started on soft toy collections......

Dont....
4. Match everything. Have you ever walked into a room where the flowered wallpaper matched the flowered tablecloth, which matched the flowered seat napkins and the seat cushions? Didn't it just give you a headache? If this scenario describes a room in your house, you may want to replace the busy flowered napkins with a complimentary solid color.  Remember...walking into a room that is easy on the eye and mind is the optimum goal here.

The same concept goes for furniture. It is better to have two matching pieces of furniture in a room, paired with a couple of complimentary single pieces. The very best room decor have been carefully collected over a period of years, rather than purchased at Super A-Mart in one fell swoop on a Saturday afternoon.  We have clients who sometimes take years to achieve the right look and balance to their home.  Choosing quality, interesting
pieces that you feel a real connection with can save you financially in the long run also.

And lastly...Dont..
5. Make it precious. The last major interior design mistake occurs when home decorators try too hard. The result is a room that makes for a great photograph, but lacks any kind of warmth or human appeal. If your guests are afraid to move a sofa pillow for fear of upsetting the aesthetic balance, you need to reassess ideas. I have a friend who once gave me my own personalised pair of little slippers for Christmas, which normally would have been such a sweet gesture, except they were specifically for the purpose of bringing to her home every time I went over for a visit, so that I could slip them on and she wouldnt have to worry about me leaving any marks on her pristine tiled floor with my shoes or bare feet.  It certainly created an atmosphere that wasnt quite welcoming...lovely lady, but now we meet for lunch out instead of me visiting.  Being too precious with your home can actually defeat the purpose of 'home'...which is a space to be enjoyed by yourself and also friends and family.
SOMETHING FOR THE FOODIES....
BARBECUED FISH WITH SPICY COCONUT NOODLE SALAD

Ingredients (serves 4)

  • 200g rice stick noodles
  • 2 Lebanese cucumbers
  • 165ml can coconut cream or milk
  • 2 1/2 tbs fish sauce
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 1 tsp caster sugar
  • 2 long red chillies, deseeded, chopped
  • 1 tbs finely grated ginger
  • 3/4 cup roughly chopped coriander leaves
  • 4 x 200g skinless blue-eye fillets (or other firm white fish)
  • 1 tbs sunflower or rice bran oil

Method

  1. Place noodles in a large bowl and pour over enough boiling water to cover. Stand for 15 minutes, occasionally stirring with tongs, then drain. Remove seeds from cucumbers, then cut into thin matchsticks.
  2. Combine coconut milk, fish sauce, lime juice, sugar, chilli, ginger, coriander and cucumber in a large bowl. Add drained noodles and toss well to combine.
  3. Heat a barbecue or chargrill pan on medium-high heat. Rub the fish with oil and season with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cook the fish for 3 minutes on each side or until cooked to your liking, then serve immediately with the coconut noodle salad.

Happy Friday and welcome...welcome to Cocktail Friday.  This week we invite you to kick off the shoes, put your feet up...play the so soothing tones Nina Simone and enjoy this weeks offering.  We do love Lime...the smell, the freshness of the colour, the delicious taste and the fact that Lime represents summer and warmth.  We couldnt go past this one for the Cocktail Friday celebration....Imbibe...Enjoy and most importantly....reeeelax...cos its Friday!

    Key Lime and Coconut Caipirinha

    You will need.....
2 oz. Cabana Cachaça (a very sweet Brazilian Rum..use other brand if you cant find this)
    1 tbsp. shredded coconut
    1 tbsp. granulated sugar
    1 lime, quartered
    Crushed ice

Muddle (no muddle is to smash about the lime preferably using a mortar and pestle that is completely clean...really bash away at the lime and let the juices and rind meld together) lime with coconut and sugar. Add Cabana Cachaça, shake, and pour over ice.
    Yummeny Yummeny....refreshing and deeeelish...Enjoy!
And so we bid you adieu for another week.  Enjoy family and friends this weekend and most importantly, be kind to YOU!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO COLETTE!

A big Happy Birthday to Colette on Wednesday of this week.  We do love it when there is a birthday because everyone seems to win!  Look at the cake we all got to share in...Turkish Delight centred cheesecake with velvetty, blood red rose petals (fresh...real ones...) on top.  And, it tasted soooo good.  Cath says that she made if from a very special recipe.  According to her, she was up all night crafting this masterpiece and  apparently the rose petals are from roses organically grown in her courtyard garden....yeah right...and I'm the next Miss Beachgirl Contest Winner!!  Thank you Jocelyns Provisions for another bakery masterpiece!

WHAT'S NEW AT CHARCOAL?

We are continually refreshing our stock and this week is no exception with some gorgeous new arrivals.

Our new French Style Washed look Urns....these look stunning either in an inside or outdoor application. You will love them!

Our European style Wooden Lanterns...these come in Large, Medium and Small.  Great as a centrepiece on the table...amazing around the pool and on and on...so many uses for these gorgeous Lanterns.  Come in and check them out for yourselves.  You will love the rustic tonings to the wood.

This beautiful little Rustic Console has had quite a few admirers this week....she is destined for a new home, so be quick to snap her up :-)

FOOD...GLORIOUS FOOD!

At a recent dinner out at one of Brisbanes newest and sexiest Restaurants...Alegria http://www.bistroalegria.com.au/  there was discussion about what we all ate for Breakfast.  Surprisingly amongst us all, the popular choice for breakfast fare was the humble egg.  Packed with goodness and vitamins, the Free Range Egg is most definitely a versatile character...good for salads in the hard-boiled style, or scrambled, poached, fried and perfect to construct a healthy Frittata or Omelette as in our recipe this week, the Asian Mushroom Omelette.

ASIAN MUSHROOM OMELETTE

Ingredients (serves 4)

  • 8 free-range eggs
  • 1 small red chilli, deseeded, finely chopped
  • 6 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons peanut oil
  • 100g button mushrooms, sliced
  • 80g snow pea sprouts, trimmed
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 1/3 cups steamed jasmine rice, to serve

Method

  1. Break 4 eggs into a bowl. Add half the chilli and half the green onions. Whisk with a fork.
  2. Heat a wok over medium heat. Add half the oil. Swirl to coat. Pour in egg mixture. Swirl to cover base and run 1cm up the side. Sprinkle half the mushrooms over egg mixture. Cook for 30 seconds or until base is set. Fold omelette in half. Tilt wok to allow any uncooked egg to run to edge. Cook for 30 seconds. Turn omelette over and cook for 30 seconds or until light golden (omelette should still be moist inside). Transfer to a plate. Cover to keep warm. Repeat with remaining eggs, chilli, green onions, oil and mushrooms.
  3. Cut omelettes in half and place on plates. Top with snow pea sprouts. Drizzle with soy sauce. Season with salt and pepper. Serve with rice

    DAME JOAN SUTHERLAND...R.I.P

Dame Joan Sutherland was the epitomy of Diva, but not as we know them today. She would put the likes of Mariah Carey to shame.  She was a gifted singer beyond compare and a true lady along with it. Shunned from the school choir as a girl for drowning out the other singers, Joan went on to work as a secretary, but all she really wanted to do was sing.  At age 19, Joan won free singing lessons, time went on and as she started singing more and more in public, her popularity and demand for her vocal style grew.
One of the most remarkable female opera singers of the 20th century, she was dubbed La Stupenda by a La Fenice audience in 1960 after a performance of the title role in Handel's Alcina. She possessed a voice of beauty, power and extraordinary agility. Her friend Luciano Pavarotti once called Sutherland the "Voice of the Century."
Sadly, the end of an era has come with the death of Dame Joan after a long illness on the 11th of October, 2010.  We couldnt let her passing go, without some kind of recognition from the team here.  She was a lady of true grace, a wonderful ambassador to Australia and a talent beyond compare.

THE 'LA STUPENDA' COCKTAIL...IT'S COCKTAIL FRIDAY FOLKS

After a bit of research, it is clear that whilst Dame Joan was a supremely cultured woman with great taste and grace, she wasnt really one to indulge in the cocktail scene.  I mean we cant really see her down at the local imbibing on a Cosmo or two.....but...we do think that if she did have the occasional clink, it would be to a La Stupenda!  And so, we bring it to you today.  A simple and very attractive cocktail that is pearlised in appearance and super delicious to the remaining senses.

    Ingredients:

    1.  1 1/2 oz rum

 2. 1 1/2 oz passionfruit vodka

 3. 1/2 oz triple sec

4. 1/2 oz lemon juice

5. 2 dashes of Angostura aromatic bitters

Preparation:

  1. Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice cubes.
  2. Shake well.
  3. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
Next week:  Offspring Inspirations, Wallpaper wisdom.

Enjoyed the blog?  Catch up with us on facebook.  We would love to hear from you!

Wishing everyone a very happy Friday...great weekend and until next week its goodbye from us...The Charcoal Girls xxx
